Our homeland is dying. The old empires came across the ocean two hundred years ago, burned the land, killed everyone who opposed them, and called it the will of god. We were born in their colonies, their cities, their plantations, their enclaves, and their outposts. We are of this land and this land is in us. This is now our home.
Our homeland is dying. Thirty years ago, the old empires dug too greedily and too deep, releasing an ancient power, an aberrant corruption of wild spirits upon the land. It quickly spread like a sickness and created regions where the laws of nature and life have gone insane, where the law of god has been forsaken. Now it consumes everything with the unstoppable force of incomprehensible ensorcellment.
The death of the world did not stop the greed of empire. They continue to search for more gold and more magic. And as they do, the spirits continue to advance, slowly, little by little, cursing everything and everyone. In their lifetimes, the lords of empire will not see the living fires, the impossible lights, the twisted bodies, and the mindless monsters that destroy our lands, they do not care that the world is ending if it ends slowly enough for them to not suffer the consequences, this is the Slow Apocalypse.
We are the Soulseekers, cursed by this damned magic. Bounded to this damned land. This magic is ours. We spit in the face of empire and make this madness our ultimate weapon. We do not fear the bilious domain of aberrant wilderness. A land of infinite miracles, a land of infinite death, the Wonderlands.
You are an 18th-century explorer. You venture deep into a wilderness that has been twisted by the supernatural. You avoid, outsmart, or destroy monsters and magical anomalies, gather the invaluable magic loot, and then hope you can make your way back to civilization in one piece.
Terra Mirabilis is a classless roleplaying game focused on lifelike characters exploring a wilderness corrupted by magic.
Player Characters act as experienced adventurers who defy the hazards of the weird and the supernatural, trying to gain wealth and magical power as they explore the dangerous, spirit-infested Wonderlands.
The game is an attempt to bring the flavor of realistic, modular systems like GURPS and Basic Roleplaying into the minimalist, rules-light format of OSR games like Into the Odd, Knave, and Cairn. The ultimate goal is to provide light rules that still create realistic resolutions to player's actions.
The key features are:
- Gritty 18th-century setting with sword-fighting and guns.
- Characters are realistic explorers searching for magical loot inside "zones" affected by magic.
- Classless character creation.
- 40 simplified unique powers. 50+ unique level-up improvements.
- 90+ Customizable spells and magic items.
- Light rules that still care about realism.
- Exploration and survival-focused rules for a variety of terrains.
- Character background (e.g. soldier, hunter, pirate, spy, merchant) helps guide narrative abilities but does not define them.
- PCs can use Alchemy, Divination, and Thaumaturgy to turn the magic of the zones to their own purpose.
- PCs are rewarded with powerful artifacts for defeating strong spirits and monsters.
